Why aren't there more games like Diablo? A soupcon of story, fast frenetic combat alleviated by a breathing space when you get back to your base, a wide variety of opponents with terrifying bosses, and ever-improving skills and equipment--it's a recipe for unalloyed pleasure, at least for many gamers.

With Space Hack, Rebelmind has taken that recipe and taken it to science fiction, with your character a Space Marine who uses primarily fire rather than melee weapons, for an interesting change of pace. Of course, you may ask yourself whether a small indie developer can provide the level of polish for which Blizzard is renowned. We think they get close, but you don't have to take our word for it. That's what demos are for.

simply. excellent.

i remember reviewing this when it was released and being surprised at the game engine. unlike the Diablo games and many of its clones, Rebelmind cooked up a nifty 3D engine with a rotatable camera and even better, corpses of monsters didn't vanish even after you left a level. there were some other nice touches, such as the journals left behind by assorted people on the space ship, some of which were pretty grim reads. the overall plot is pretty by the numbers stuff, but for a "simple" dungeon crawl, the game gets it done right.

also, Rebelmind's followup, The Chosen: Well of Souls is pretty good (despite some ridiculously off-base reviews from major sites). The game deserves a look just for the environments alone. you can zoom in this time and although this now makes for some camera jitters in too many tight areas, the game is really gorgeous at times (i actually use screenshots from The Chosen for wallpaper from time to time)
