Robert Sacks's Errata and Tournament Rules for Empires of the Middle Ages

Errata

N.B.: These apply to the original SPI edition.

The Map:

  • Saxony and Brandenburg speak Old Saxon, not Old High German.
  • Hungary speaks non-Indo-European, not Langue d'Oc
  • Smolensk is Eastern Orthodox, not Pagan
  • Croatia connects to the Adriatic Sea

[9.32, 9.52] Effectiveness Ratings are halved for multiple sea areas if positive; if negative, use 1.5 times the Effectiveness Rating, round up, and then add gold.

[9.4] A Diplomatic Conquest does not include or imply a Diplomatic Tie.

[18.0, procedure 2] A player may obtain possession and form a tie in either order.

[21.3 case 4] An exile automatically acquires any Area of the exact same Language and Religion as his Leader if a Magnate appears there.

[24.51] [9.54 first sentence] applies: A Magnate will attack through a seafaring populated Area and only one directly adjacent Sea Area.

[27.5, 28.5] Hungary is Pagan in these scenarios (Charlemagne, Millennium)

[Table 17.22] (Rebellion Value Summary): -2 if the owning Player has a Diplomatic Tie to the Area. +2 for one or more unfriendly (unwaived) Diplomatic Ties to the Area

[22.3] (Conversion Rating Chart): Non-Indo-European has a proxelytic Ability Rating of 0 and Convictional Strength Rating of 16.

Tournament Rules

  1. The winner on each board will advance to the second round.
  2. Runners-up will be determined by victory points + hard luck points (see below).
  3. At least one runer-up on each board will advance to the second round.
  4. The winner of the tournament will be:
    1. The winner of two games with the most victory points, or if none;
    2. The winner of one game with the most victory + hard luck points
  5. Runners-up for the tournament will be determined by victory + hard luck points

Schedule of Hard Luck Points (Each occurrence)

1 pt: Leader dies heirless
+1pt: Each claim lost
1 pt: Each province after the first subject to a famine
1 pt: Each province after the first subject to an epidemic
1 pt: Each attack after the first by a Magnate
1 pt: Each attack after the first by a Raider
1 pt: Each province plagued
2 pts: Each province lost to heresy, magnate, crusaders, rebellion, after an unsuccessful endeavor or after leader dies heirless
1 pt: Each point less than 7 in the sum of statures rolled for a leader.

Also, when playing Charlemagne, Millennium, or Crusades, Poland is unplayed.
