Radial Plus is an arena space shooter with one twist on the usual paradigm of the form: If you shoot an enemy directly, it suffers no damage, but it does suffer damage if you hit it with a bank shot. In other words, you have to find the right place in the geography and the right angle at which to fire to hit your enemies.
This seemingly minor change, however, creates an extremely different play experience. While a typical shmup involves fast, frenetic combat and constant dodging, in Radial Plus you often move hesitantly, seeking to locate enemies before they spot you and, ideally, setting up a shot to kill them before they can return fire. There's a stealth element to the game, in other words.
You can't always manage this, however; and while it's usually possible to withdraw and try again, quite often you find yourself in a more typically shmup-like battle, having to abandon stealth and try to get off a bank shot even while dodging a hail of enemy bullets.
An interesting twist on the genre, with pleasant, if minimal, sound and graphics.
