When I first took a look at Protect My Planet! my initial impression was negative; the basic gameplay is that you click on things to kill them. As basic UI, this is inherently dull, and if the virtue of action games is their inculcation of skill, this generally means something more than accurate and rapid mouse motion.

And yet, I found the game tense and quite engaging.

One reason for this is the visual framing; that's Earth rotating there at screen center, and millions are dying every time I miss clicking on a damn incoming asteroid. But for the most part, it's because of tried and true techniques borrowed from shmups: swarms of attackers toward the end of a level, a variety of opponents with different attack styles (big asteroid you have to click on repeatedly, some that break up into swarms of little ones that are a pain to hit, etc.), and between-level upgrades.

This plus a tense techno score and good visuals, and you have a pretty polished little game. Nothing startling nor particularly imaginative, but it does what it sets out to do, and does it reasonably well.

no workie

Ladies, Gentlemen and in particular the guy who made this game:

It does not work. The earth spins and the population goes up but nothing happens after that. Just music. Spinning earth. Population rising.

If this is an art piece then yeah ok i get it. But In the picture it looks like something explodes. I can imagine what happens in any case.

gamer input

When I first played this game, I was newly introduced to the creation of video games as more than a hobby, and I was excited to learn more about how. Now, after experiencing so much, I look on this as a milestone in my educational career, from the game play to the music to all of the factoid unlockables. Great stuff in a neat package.
